What Does the Bible Say About Forgiveness?
You don't say forgiveness with your mouth. It's something you do with your heart. Many people say they forgive, but they never really forgive. There is a hidden bitterness in their hearts. Imagine if God had never truly forgiven us. where would we be Hell, we belong.

The only reason we can forgive others is because God forgave us first.
Forgiveness comes from God, and when we forgive others, it is an earthly reflection of God and His love poured out on the cross of Jesus Christ.
Jesus is the reason we forgive. Jesus is the reason we don't want to hold grudges. He's totally worth it. The price paid for you is too high.
Christian quotes about forgiveness

"Holding a grudge doesn't make you strong, it makes you bitter, forgiveness doesn't make you weak, it sets you free."
"Life gets easier when you learn to accept an apology you never got."
"Forgiveness does not change the past, but it expands the future."
“Forgive others as quickly as you forgive of God Ty.
“To be a Christian is to forgive the unforgivable because God has forgiven the unforgivable in you.” C. S. Lewis
“And you know, when you've experienced grace and you feel forgiven, you're a lot more forgiving of other people. You are much kinder to others.
“Jesus says that those who live by God's forgiveness must imitate them. The man whose only hope is that God will not hold him accountable loses the right to blame him for others.” David Jeremiah
"Forgiveness is an act of the will, and the will can function regardless of the temperature of the heart." Corrie Ten Boom
“Forgiveness is not a feeling; it is an obligation. It is a choice to be merciful and not blame the sinner. Forgiveness is an expression of love.” Gary Chapman
“The grace of forgiveness, because God Himself paid the price, is characteristic of Christians and stands up beautifully in our hateful, unforgiving world. God's forgiveness gives us a fresh start.” – Ravi Zacharias

“Forgiveness is releasing a prisoner and discovering that the prisoner was you.” Lewis B. Smith
"Forgiving yourself is just as necessary as forgiving others, and the main reason forgiveness seems so difficult is that we have failed to forgive ourselves." Christian D. Larson
Pride keeps us from forgiving others
We see it as a weakness when actually it is a strength. We don't want to appear vulnerable by being the first to apologize when both parties usually feel the same way. we mustGet rid of the pride. Why keep it? I know it's difficult. Everything in us wants to keep our pride. We would rather end the relationship forever than lose pride. So we have to take it to the Lord. God help me lose my pride. God heal my wounded heart. We must turn our hearts to His will. We go to him and he helps us to say what needs to be said.
1. Proverbs 29:23"Pride humbles peoplebut those who are humble in spirit are glorified.”
2. Proverbs 11:2 “When pride comes, shame comes, butWith humility comes wisdom“.– (What the Bible says about humility?)
3. Proverbs 16:18"Pride before destructionand a spirit exalted before the fall.”
Love is always associated with forgiveness
Without love no one will see the Lord. Love takes away pride. Love was poured out on the cross. We should love not only the person but also the Lord. "I can't hold a grudge.God's loveHe's too big for me to hold a grudge against.” Although people often sin against us, it's usually because of people we love. Even though they have sinned against us, we know we still love them, but their actions have hurt us.
4. 1. Corinthians 13:4-7“Love is patient, love is kindand he is not jealous; Love does not boast and is not arrogant, does not behave indecently;not looking for his, is not provoked,he does not heed the unjust who suffers, he does not rejoice in injustice but rejoices in the truth; tolerates everythingBelieve all, hope all, endure all.
5. Colossians 3:13-14 "Bear with one another and forgive one anotherif any of you have a complaint against anyone.Forgive as the Lord has forgiven you.And above all these virtuesPut on the love that unites them all in perfect unity.”
6. 1 Peter 4:8 “First you love one another dearly, forLove covers a multitude of sins“.
There's a quote that says, "Forgive and forget."
While this sounds good and is good advice, it is difficult to implement. We have to pray that we forget these things, but sometimes they pop up in the back of our minds. What we have to do is forget it from our speech. I mean never bring it up. This will damage your relationship even more.
Love does not touch the subject. Don't even try to make a joke like some people do. Just forget it completely. A lot of people say they forgive, but you can tell they don't, because when a small thing comes up, they treat it like a big deal because they're holding on to the past. They're not really crazy about the little things, but they're still crazy about the past.
Sometimes they even list an extensive list of the past. It's very commonspouses in marriage. Don't keep bad records, just as Jesus didn't keep records. Jesus knows what we have done in the past. He knows our sins, but when he died on the cross, he paid for everything.
He has put our sins aside and touches them no more. When we refuse to raise the issue with others and sincerely forgive from our hearts, it is a reflection of our Savior and His great love.
7. Proverbs 17:9 “Those who want to cultivate love hide insults, butRepeating the thing separates close friends.”
8. Luke 23:34 “And Jesus said: “Father!forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."And they cast lots to distribute his clothes."
9 Hebrews 8:12 “For I will forgive their iniquities andThey will no longer remember their sins.
10. Ephesians 1:7 “In him we have redemption through his blood,Forgiveness of sins according to the riches of God's grace.”
Go and make up with your brother
There were times when I prayed and all I could think about was that my relationship with someone was wrong.
You try to focus your mind on other things, but it keeps eating you up. All you have to do is say, "Okay, God, I'm going to make peace." That doesn't mean we have to be constantly around people who hurt us, but we have to be at peace with everyone.
Often it may not be your fault. Maybe someone was offended by a silly situation. Maybe someone has sinned against you. It has happened to me many times. Someone slandered me, but I still sought reconciliation.
I heard people say, "I don't need him in my life," but that was pride. That shouldn't be our way of thinking. If possible, we should be at peace with everyone.
11. Maybe Matthew 5:23-24 “When you present your gift on the altarAnd remember that your brother or sister has something against you. Leave your gift there at the altar. Go first and make up with them; Then come and offer your gift.
12. Romans 12:16-18 “Be in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low standing. Don't be conceited. Repay no one evil for evil. Make sure you know what to do.” is right in everyone's eyes.If possible, as far as it depends on you, live in harmony with everyone.”
Unforgiveness only hurts you in the end.
Holding grudges breeds bitterness and hatred. Don't go and mentally kill someone. We've all done it before. We've all had unholy thoughts about people who have sinned against us or done something we didn't like. Unforgiveness is unhealthy.
You look away from Christ and Satan starts throwing things into your mind. Satan wants you to think about what you should have done or said in the confrontation. He wants you to think about violence. Our first thought should not be to stick out the middle finger.
We should immediately turn to the Lord and ask for His help to remove these evil desires and focus on Him. Sometimes we have to cry out to him because the situation hurts and these evil desires are killing us.
13. Romans 12:19-21Take no vengeance, dear friends, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written: “It is my business to take vengeance; i will refundsays the Lord. On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he's thirsty, give him something to drink. This will throw hot coals on his head. "Don't be defeated by evil, but overcome evil with good."
14. Proverbs 16:32 "He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who controls his spirit than he who conquers a city."
15. Epheser 4:26-27 „Don't sin in your anger”: Don't let the sun go down while you're still angryand does not support the devil.”
16. Proverbs 14:29 “He who is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who is quick in mind increases folly.”
Unforgiveness is an expression of hatred.
17. Leviticus 19:17-18You will not hate your countrymanin your heart; You can certainly admonish your neighborbut he will not endure any sin because of it. Do not take revenge or hold grudges against the sons of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself.; I am the Lord.”
18. Proverbs 10:12"Hatred creates conflictbut love covers all evil.
We must not give in to others
Just as God does not give up on us, neither do we give up on others. There are people who are married to alcoholics and the alcoholic spouse keeps asking for forgiveness and I know it's hard on the other spouse. But once again we must forgive.
19 Luke 17:3-4 “Be careful! If your brother sins, blame him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he insults you seven times a day and comes back to you seven times and says, "I'm sorry," then forgive him.
Some people don't realize the importance of holding a grudge.
People say things like, "But you just don't know what he did." Let me explain something to you. You just don't know what you did! You have sinned against a holy God! You do nothing but sin. Even your greatest creations are filthy rags and never serve 100% for the glory of God.
Even the legal system shows that a good judge cannot forgive a criminal like you. God has taken your place. God suffered for you on the cross. God lived a life that you could not live. There are people who used to curse Jesus but now trust Him as their Lord and Savior.
Jesus should never have forgiven them, just as He should never have forgiven an unfortunate one like me.How dare you?If God can forgive murderers, if God can forgive blasphemers, if God can forgive idolaters, why can't you forgive this little thing?
God would be just and loving if he sent us all to hell. We cheer in movies when criminals get what they deserve. How dare you? If you cannot show mercy, God will not show you mercy.
Unforgiveness is proof of one's disbelief. Regret. Forgive your parents, forgive that old friend, forgive your spouse, forgive your children, forgive that person in your church. Don't keep it in your heart any longer. Regret.
20. Matthew 6:14-15 “ForIf you forgive other people when they sin against you, your Heavenly Father will forgive you too. But if you don't forgive others their sins, your father won't forgive your sins.
21. Matthew 5:7"Blessed are the mercifulfor they will have mercy.”
22. Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind to one another, kind to one another,Forgive one another, just as God forgave you in Christ.”
23. Possibly Matthew 18:24-35 “When it began to rain, a man was brought before him who owed him 10,000 talents. Since he could not repay it, his master ordered that he, his wife, his children and everything he owned, had to be sold to pay off the debt. "At that moment, the slave bowed to him and said, 'Be patient with me, I will pay you everything!' After thatThe slave's master took pity on him, released him, and forgave him the loan. “But this slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him 100 denarii. He grabbed him and started strangling him and said, 'Pay back what you owe!'” At that moment, his fellow slave fell down and begged him, “Be patient, I will repay you.” But he was not ready. On the contrary, he went and put him in prison until he could pay off his debt. When the other slaves saw what had happened, they became very sad and left and told their master everything that had happened. "When he called him, his master said to him, 'You wicked slave! I canceled all your debts because you asked me to. Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you? And his lord became angry and handed him over to the jailers to be tortured until he paid all that was owed. This is what my heavenly Father will do to you unless each of you forgive your brother from the bottom of your heart.”
Examples of forgiveness in the Bible
Saul tried to kill David. David had the opportunity to kill Saul but forgave him and left the situation to the Lord. If David pulls it off in his extreme situation, we have no excuse.
24.1 Samuel 24:10-12 “Behold, today your eyes saw that today in the cave the Lord delivered you into my hand, and some said they would kill you, but my eye had pity on you; and I said, I will do that.” Do not put my hand against my Lord, for he is the Lord's anointed. Now, my father, look! Verily, look at the hem of your robe in my hand! Because in thisI cut off the hem of your robe and I did not kill you. Know and see that in my hands there is no evil and no rebellion, and I have not sinned against you, although you seek to take my life to take it.The Lord judge between me and you, and the Lord avenge me on you; but my hand will not be against you."
God can mend any relationship.
Let God work in you and the other side and make a broken thing beautiful. Go to him and pray that his hands will move in your life. God is faithful to move.
25. Jeremiah 32:27 “I am the Lord, the God of all men.Is something too difficult for me?”
I would like to add that sometimes we sin against people and feel ashamed of our actions. We can apologize to those offended, but the guilt remains. Many people say that one must forgive oneself, but there is no such statement in the Bible.
We can either trust God's mercy and forgiveness in Christ, or we can trust Satan and his lies. Confess your sins, let go and move on. Trust in the Lord and ask Him for help in this situation and to understand His grace.
